He came into our trench today to talk to Captain Blackadder, and I bally well felt like all of my insides were on fire or worse.

Anthony--

No, I mustn't call him that now. This is General Melchett. Old Walrus-Face.

And dash it all if I'll ever be able to call him that again. Not after the way he kissed me like he bloody well meant it.

Whatever his name is now, he looked horrid when he came into the bunk, white as a sheet and looking as though he'd gotten thoroughly hammered by something a sight more painful than the Boche the night before. His eyes looked haunted, and I wanted to reach out to him. I almost did, too.

But when he looked at me full on, and then turned back to Captain Blackadder as if... as if...

He told me his secrets. He shared his worries with me. He cleaned up my hand when I slipped and cut it. He made things right as rain again.

And now... it's like he doesn't know me at all.
