I don't really have and n opinion on scars one way or the other but I'm definitely with Harry. More human, more real = wicked awesome.
I'm not surprised at all that Bob would change how he looked when he manifested. I also think that really people don't truly know what they look like to other people. It would be hard to "recreate" the image you have of yourself in your head and have it match up exactly with what you really look like.
This was the part I commented the least on because I knew I would go on and on about it if I didn't. Oh complex emotions. Poor Harry trying to protect his heart and protecting it right off a cliff (metaphorically). Low self-esteem!Harry makes me want to cuddle him and pet his hair and tell him that people do like him, really. You pull it off well, most of the time people are too heavy with these types of emotions and the character just comes off as whiny (which I cannot abide) or emo (which I just make fun of). You've struck a nice balance between Harry's wistful hope and soul-crushing certainty that he will never be loved.
