Bone-headed mistakes... fixed! Hurray! Thank you for the catches there. I can't believe I didn't reread the whole thing and catch them.
That said, holy shit. (In a good way!)
Yes, Harry was being a dork. He'd forgotten about the "never come out" bit, and was being a guy about things.
And wow. You really thought this through!
Now that I think about it, Bob hadn't really seen too much of Harry before this point. I know that Harry didn't come back home until The First Return, when he was 21. And then a year or so later, he has his epiphany, and then he starts visiting home more often. I hadn't intended for Harry to be such a stranger to Bob, but alas, that's how it turned out. I'm thinking I should have bridged those years a bit better, but at the same time, I wanted to keep the series moving? Gaaah.
Still, yes, the fact that Bob shows up in front of the Council to testify on Harry's behalf about what happened, and then the fight in Confrontation is pretty scary, and Bob being left in there for so long before Harry came to talk to him again. I figured Bob always had a period with each master where he wasn't sure what approach to take with them -- should he cut to the chase, or would he be allowed to ramble? Should he flatter them, or be concise? And as a result, stepford!Bob showed up because he really didn't feel like he knew this version of Harry, and that in itself should've made an impression on Harry. Here they are, very good friends as Harry's growing up, but when Harry's an adult, it's as though Bob doesn't know him at all, and that's a bad sign.
So. You rambled, but I rambled back. It was self-defense!
But hey, I'm glad that even with all of the "gaah" that you liked the story. <3
