If it makes you feel any better, I would ordinarily hate something like this coming between my OTP, but in this case, I ended up being okay with it both personally and narratively because Harry and Dieter are more like friends who are sharing this aspect of Harry's life with each other. Dieter's a guy who's been around the block a few times, but being with Harry is fun, and there's no strings attached.
I also liked the idea of Harry coming across a guy who was willing to share his experience, but share it in such a way that it's not a sour memory, or a thing to regret. It's almost tempting to bring him back into Harry's life at a later point, just so that there's that familiarity, but at the same time, they didn't really get to know each other that well. If they'd spent longer than an evening together, I think it would mean more to bring him back, but this way, Harry gets the experience he wants, and he's got a happy memory whenever he thinks about his first teacher.
