While Stephen and Hugh are only two years apart in age, the age difference between George and Melchett is more noticeable because of the mustache that Stephen sports.
From my personal calculations, George is somewhere in his twenties when he leapfrogged down to the registration office with his buddies. Melchett's age is only slightly more concrete because he mentions the game of '96 when his team beat the Harrow team 15-4, which possibly put him in his twenties in 1896, which would make him 38 at the very youngest in 1914.
But yes, I have a feeling that such a big age difference kind of intimidates other slashers (especially the ones that like pairings between a child and an adult) to the point where, if they ignore the backstory that emphasizes the age difference long enough, then they can imagine them as being closer in age.
