AUTHOR'S NOTES: This is an AU that assumes that Jamie was allowed to stay with the Doctor with his memories intact after "The War Games". Also, "The Two Doctors" took place in Season 6B. In this universe, Jamie and Jo are both the Third Doctor's companions, but Jo doesn't appear in this scene because that's just how I wrote it.

In this scene, Jamie has just started to tell the second Doctor about all the adventures they've had after Two regenerated into Three, and then this starts.

"Ah ah ah," the Doctor said quickly, holding up a hand to stop Jamie mid-word. "You mustn't tell me. You see, for me, what you're describing hasn't happened yet. When I was brought here, you were still angry with me about having left Victoria behind on Earth." He paused for a moment, and then frowned. "You know, I think we might actually be able to pop by and visit her again."

"What?" Jamie said, dumbfounded. "But that was ages ago, Doctor!"

"For you, yes, but for me, only a few days in the time vortex have gone by."

Jamie shook his head. "I don't get it."

The Doctor sighed. "Well, it would take more time than I have at the moment to explain it properly, and I really must be off. The Time Lords broke their precious rules by bringing myself and my--" He shot the taller Doctor a sour look. "Yes, well, either way, Jamie, I must dash."

"Wait!" Jamie said quickly, reaching out a hand to grab the Doctor's sleeve. "Doctor, I..." He stopped for a moment, and then remembered the third man in the room.

The taller Doctor smiled gently. "It's all right, Jamie. I'll be out in the lab when you're finished." He shot his previous incarnation an equally venomous glare and swept out of the room.

Jamie watched the taller man go before turning back to the Doctor. "Doctor, I..." He hesitated for a moment before sighing. "I miss you."

The Doctor blinked, and then frowned. "Oh, Jamie, I'm so terribly sorry. I hope that circumstances weren't too dire when I changed." He shot a look at the TARDIS doors. "Although, if you're traveling around with that fool, they had to have been."

Jamie was surprised to find himself chuckling a little. "He's not so bad, once you get to know him," he replied. "After all, he is you."

Pale blue eyes focused on him again. "Oh, Jamie. Are you all right?"

"Aye," Jamie nodded. "I try to keep him out of trouble as best I can, but he's like you like that."

The Doctor scowled. "I can assure you, Jamie, we're nothing alike."

Jamie snorted. "And who was speaking in unison a little while ago?"

The Doctor drew himself up, looking offended. "That was just a minor temporal distortion, that's all."

"Oh, aye," Jamie said, smiling and nodding. "Temporal distortion. Of course."

"Well, really, Jamie, the thought of me turning into that puffed-up, dandified clown--"

The rest of what the Doctor was going to say was cut off when Jamie cupped his face in his hands and kissed him gently, on the lips.

After a long moment of the Doctor not responding, Jamie pulled back. "Doctor?"

The Doctor blinked. "Jamie?"

Jamie rolled his eyes. "I'm not about to repeat your name just to have ye repeat mine. What's wrong? By the time you regenerated, we--"

A finger to his lips stopped Jamie from speaking further. "Stop for a moment, Jamie."

Jamie blinked.

"When did our relationship change?" The Doctor asked firmly, his eyes locked on Jamie's.

"A week or two after Victoria left?" Jamie answered cautiously.

The Doctor's eyes narrowed in thought. "And how did it happen? Did you initiate things, or did I?"

"Oh, well," Jamie started, trying to remember the exact details. "Well, we'd just recovered from dealing with the--"

"Don't tell me those specifics, just tell me about the conversation," the Doctor said firmly.

"I would, if you'd stop interrupting," Jamie groused.

"I'm sorry, Jamie," the Doctor apologized. "Please, do continue."

"Well, you were fiddling with some controls on the TARDIS, and we hadn't landed anywhere yet, and you mentioned that things had changed. Well, I got nervous, since I wasn't sure if you'd found out about how I felt or anything like that, and then you told me it was all right, that you'd..." Jamie's voice slowed, his eyes widening. "Already... known."

The Doctor blinked. "We've managed to create a paradox by ourselves? Oh, dear. The Time Lords aren't going to like that."

"The Time Lords!" Jamie's surprise turned savage. "The next time I see those buggers, I'll show them what for. Threatening to separate us just because you--"

"Jamie!" The Doctor snapped, surprising Jamie into silence. "You really mustn't tell me anything further! We've already created one paradox as it is. Whatever grievances you have with the Time Lords will have to wait until you encounter them with my--" He stopped, and looked like he was about to swallow something foul. "My-- oh, you know! Really, Jamie, I would have thought he would have told you more about time travel, especially since you saw my regeneration."

Jamie shook his head. "We've not been able to go anywhere. And no--" he said quickly at the Doctor's surprised look, "--I'll not tell you. You've growled at me enough for one day."

"Oh, really, Jamie, you could tell me a little bit, can't you?" The Doctor wheedled, his disapproving face nowhere to be seen.

"Don't tell me this, Jamie," Jamie muttered. "Tell me that, Jamie. Don't kiss me, Jamie. Don't tell me why you're threatening violence on the Time Lords, Jamie. You really should make up your mind," Jamie complained.

The Doctor drew himself up. "Well, I'll just make sure to give myself a small memory wipe when I get back to my relative timestream."

"No, you won't," Jamie pointed out. "You hate not remembering things."

The Doctor glared at him. "Why haven't you two been able to travel?"

"Who else?" Jamie shrugged. "The Time Lords. First, we came across--" He stopped himself at the Doctor's disapproving look. "All right, so we went to your home, right? Gallifrey. And then they were going to... well... change you, and then send me back home."

The Doctor's eyes widened. "Oh, Jamie."

Jamie shook his head. "Something happened, and we were allowed to travel a bit longer in the TARDIS, but after you met with Das--someone, and... things... happened." He shot the Doctor a sour look. "How'm I supposed to tell you what happened when you'll not hear the story?"

"Because knowing too much of your own future is bad for you," the Doctor grumped. "I'm assuming that something happened, and they stole my ability to fly the TARDIS out of this specific time and space?"

Jamie nodded, finally glad to have a question he could answer reliably. "Aye."

The Doctor pursed his lips. "I see..." He straightened up, and shot Jamie a warm smile. "Well! Like I said before, I really must be off. You've given me quite some food for thought."

Jamie frowned. "Do you really have to go?" he asked quietly.

The Doctor paused for a moment, and then rested both of his hands on Jamie's shoulders. "It would be dangerous for me to remain here. Not only would the two timestreams be adversely affected, but what about your younger self, left behind in the TARDIS? You and I still have adventures ahead of us, of course, or else you wouldn't be here with... well, him, right now, right?"

Jamie sighed. "Aye, Doctor. I know."

The Doctor nodded, his smile slipping. "I'm sorry, Jamie."

"Aye," Jamie murmured, resting his forehead against the Doctor's, "me too."

"Oh, Jamie," the Doctor tried to sound encouraging. "It's not as bad as all that, I promise."

Jamie's eyes slipped closed. "I saw you transform in front of me, Doctor."

The Doctor's shoulders stiffened under Jamie's hands.

"Why didnae ye tell me about how you can change your body?" Jamie asked into the Doctor's jacket. "If he hadn't dragged me away when he did, I'd've died trying to look for you--"

He could hear the Doctor's breath hitch from this close to the man, and then he felt two strong hands, one sliding to his hip while the other wove fingers into Jamie's hair and gently steered him into a soft kiss that quickly grew in intensity. By the time the two of them had separated, Jamie had the Doctor's hips pinned against one edge of the TARDIS's console, arms wrapped around each other as though they were trying to stay afloat amidst the wreckage of a ship.

Breathing heavily, Jamie rested his head on the Doctor's shoulder, tucking his face into the Doctor's neck and smelling the faint scent of the Time Lord's skin. "I don't want you to go," he whispered.

The Doctor's hands stroked his back and arms a bit awkwardly. "I'm so sorry."

They stayed like that for a long moment before Jamie managed to pull himself together. It took more effort than he liked in order to look the Doctor in the eye, but when he did, he stared into the pale blue irises as though he were trying to commit every scrap of detail to memory. And perhaps he did. "Promise me something, Doctor."

"Jamie, I don't think that's such a good--"

"Promise me."

There must have been something in Jamie's voice, because the Doctor's protest died completely. "What, exactly, am I promising?"

"That you won't waste a moment," Jamie whispered. "Tell me-- him." He closed his eyes briefly. "Tell him straight away. Don't leave it for after some planet where we're nearly killed. Don't waste another moment--" His vision was getting blurry but he blinked rapidly to clear it. "Please, Doctor."

Fingers stroked his face, his cheek, and the Doctor nodded. "I promise." He paused, and then smiled mischievously. "I dare say, Jamie, you must have some new memories to keep you company now."

Jamie blinked, and just like the Doctor said, new memories flooded into his mind. Nights spent lazing around in flannel sheets... days in the TARDIS, laughing with Zoe, and sneaking kisses when they thought Zoe wasn't looking, and inviting her to kiss them both when she was...

Jamie blinked, and the rush of images, sounds, scents was neatly tucked away in the back of his mind, leaving him staring at his Doctor with some approaching wonder.

"Farewell, Jamie," the Doctor murmured.

It felt like ice was running through Jamie's veins, but he stopped himself from protesting. He had to do this. He'd done it once before, but this time... it felt worse, somehow. "Good... Goodbye, Doctor."

The Doctor gave him one last, slow kiss, and then released him. "Out of the TARDIS, Jamie. The Time Lords will take it from here, I think."

"Can't I see you off?" Jamie asked.

The Doctor sighed, shaking his head. "I'm afraid not. It's a tricky business, perception. I wouldn't want you to hurt your eyes trying to watch me disappear." His voice pitched a bit lower, and he said, "Perhaps it would be best if you went outside. I shan't take too long."

Jamie wanted to argue, but he sighed and nodded. "All right, Doctor." He watched as the Doctor flipped a switch and the TARDIS doors swung open.

The four steps it took to leave the TARDIS were the longest he'd ever had to take, and just as he looked over his shoulder to the Doctor one last time, he saw the dark-haired man fade from view, waving one hand as he did so.

Gritting his teeth, Jamie finished leaving the TARDIS, closing the blue door behind him, and breathed deeply.

The Doctor, the taller one that liked wearing frilly things, tilted his head a little. "Is he gone?"

Jamie nodded silently.

"... I see."

Jamie looked up at the Doctor, and for a moment, it looked as though the man had pale blue eyes, but in a flash, it was gone. "Doctor?"

"Yes, Jamie?"

"We're not going anywhere, are we?" he asked.

The Doctor shook his head. "No."

Jamie paused for a moment, and then nodded a few times. "All right. I'll..." He breathed slowly before finishing, his hand straying to the handle on the TARDIS's door. "I'll be in my room if you need me."

The Doctor watched him for a long moment before he nodded. "All right, Jamie." As Jamie turned to go back inside the TARDIS, the Doctor added, "For what it's worth, I'm sorry."

"Aye," Jamie murmured. "I am too."

*offers tissue apologetically?*

I can't seem to do anything with Two and Jamie except think of angsty stuff. :(

Hopefully, I'll be able to get around to the smut idea I have, and that way, there will be hot smut to partake. Raar.

I like the idea of the AU, but part of me is still trying to figure out how Jamie would've squeaked out of being separated from the Doctor by the Time Lords. Hrm.

I'm a little sad that my first semi-serious venture for the Second Doctor turned out being this sad. Hopefully, I'll finish the Two/Jamie smut one day and post, but yeah.

I'm sorry that it was sad, but thank you for the comment!

Thank you for the comment! I really should've made this a full-blown fic, but I'm glad it still works as an independent scene. *^^*

And hee! Your icon is made of love!
